The study of topological order in metamaterials has been garnering interest in recent years, both due to the simulative capabilities it brings to condensed matter study, and due to the novel properties they exhibit. In particular, photonic waveguide metamaterials with changing chirality have been shown to exhibit robust band-gaps, and to .exhibit robust band-gaps, and allow straightforward testing of predictions.
In our study we constructed such a metamaterial coplanar waveguide with a free moving ground plane. This allowed us to easily control the gap width, even going so far as closing it altogether and reopening it, with topologically distinct chiral properties
